Kingdoms and city states, so called polis, spread across the region from about 800 BCE. The first Olympic games were held in 776 BCE. The Athenian Empire was at its peak around 450 BCE, this is when many of the Greek monuments were built.  Greece is one of the earlier members of the European community, joining in 1981 in what today is the European Union.
